After a year off from spending their preseason abroad, the New York Cosmos look like they’re returning to their preseason tradition.
On Friday, the Cosmos officially announced a three-game preseason schedule in the Dominican Republic. This follows confirmation by both Danny Szetela and multiple Dominican clubs of the trip. The three-game schedule includes opponents Atlántico FC, Atlético Pantoja, and the Dominican National Team. with the matches being contested on February 28th, March 3rd, and March 5th, respectively. The club will reportedly left the States for the tour on Friday.
“We anticipate an intense preseason, starting with our trip to the Dominican Republic,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese in a press release. “Our first three matches will help us get the group together and integrate our latest signings to the squad. We look forward to starting the 2017 preseason the best possible way.”
Both Atlántico FC and Atlético Pantoja have had recent success in the two-year-old Liga Dominicana de Fútbol. Atlántico achieved a second-place finish in their debut season in the Dominican first division, with Atlético Pantoja, nicknamed “The Warriors”, winning the championship that same year.
The Cosmos will be making some history, becoming the first American professional soccer club to play a match against the Dominican National Team. This will be the club’s second visit. During their first in June of 1976; the Cosmos pulled out a 2-1 victory against Haitian club Violette Athletic Club.
