Welp, our little rumor didn’t last long.
The Cosmos have confirmed that not only Alexis Velela, but David Diosa will both travel to Málaga CF of the Spanish Liga, following Hunter Gorskie and Sebastian Guenzatti who did the same in early 2015.
Like last year, the two players will spend a week in the Málaga system before training with its reserve side, Atlético Malagueño.
Diosa has been with the Cosmos since the 2013 fall season, making 15 appearances and scoring one goal across three season. Though listed as a forward, head coach Giovanni Savarese began to experiment with his positioning, moving him into an attacking left back role at points.
Velela has yet to see any minutes as a member of the Cosmos, though he spent time with the US U-17 squad and played in the U-17 World Cup.
“We’re excited for David and Alexis to have this opportunity,” said Cosmos Technical Director Luke Sassano. “As younger players, being able to learn from Málaga’s exceptional coaching staff and training environment will help to further their development.”
Pretty excited here, too. This is a great opportunity for both of these players. And with this now happening two consecutive years, I have to wonder if this is an indicator for the relationship between the two clubs.
