The Cosmos filled out their goalkeeper corps this morning with the announcement of the re-signing of Brian Holt.

Holt did not see much action last year, but when he did, he came up big. With Jimmy Maurer out for preventative care and Kyle Zobeck still recovering from injury, Holt was called upon to step into the net against the Carolina Railhawks on August 30th. A spirited performance by him helped them get all three points as the Cosmos prevailed 3-2.

Holt also featured in a preseason win over the Ventura County Fusion of the Premier Development League and the second half of the historic friendly in Cuba on June 2nd.

“Brian is an excellent goalkeeper,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese. “Last season he showed his ability on a constant basis, and he earned his spot on this team. He has worked hard to be here.”

Holt’s experience has included stints with the Philadelphia Union of MLS and two of their USL developmental affiliates, the Harrisburg City Islanders and Reading United.

With Jimmy Maurer already returning and Kyle Zobeck getting re-signed last month, the Cosmos now have three keepers available to them. With Zobeck only getting in one match last season, it’ll be interesting to see if Zobeck winds up retaining the second goalkeeper spot, or if Holt will be able to snatch it away.

  1. Nice guy, played well that one time against RailHawks. Can he push Maurer and Zobeck or is this an injury insurance/Cosmos B signing?

    • My theory is a little of everything. I don’t think he pushes Maurer, but I believe he could battle with Zobeck, especially with him only playing one game all year due to injury. But, still too early to tell. Zobeck has the edge, at least for now, I think. Failing that, his help on Cosmos B could be big.
