The Cosmos announced the acquisition of Gabriel Farfán on Friday through a loan from Chiapas FC of Liga MX. The loan will run through the duration of the 2016 NASL spring season. The versatility of the 27-year-old midfielder/defender should provide some helpful depth, especially on the back line of a club with so many options in the midfield.
“He is a versatile player that can compete in many different positions for us. He brings with him valuable experience having played in North America and at the top level in Mexico. We welcome him to the club,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese.
This is not the first time the player has found himself loaned out. After starting his career with the Philadelphia Union in 2011, he was traded to Chivas USA three seasons later. After 65 appearances, 53 of them starts, between both clubs, Farfán was loaned out to Chiapas. He was eventually sold to the Jaguares and made 14 appearances over three seasons with five of them, and a goal, coming just last season.
The announcement also solves the mystery of the unnamed “trialist” at the Fresno Fuego match when an unnamed player in the #27 shirt started the match at the right back position. While not a trialist, Farfán’s name could not be disclosed until now.
The former US youth international joins Yasmani Duk as the only two players on loan with the New York side. Between his versatility and his experiences in Liga MX, he will undoubtedly come in handy, particularly when the schedule begins to get heavier in the fall.
