And now, looking ahead to another year on the field, the club announced that holding midfielder would be in green and white for 2017.
While details of the deal were not released, TICC learned that the deal was not a loan, but a signing that had involved a transfer fee being paid to the Deltas.
“I’m very pleased that we were able to bring Danny back to the team. He is an experienced player and has contributed a lot to this team over the last few years,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese in a press release on Thursday. “I’d also like to thank the San Francisco Deltas for helping to make this transition seamless.”
Szetela played in 24 games last year, starting 13 of them. He scored once in the regular season, but most fans will remember his efforts in the 2016 US Open Cup showdown with NYCFC when he headed in a winner in the 88th minute.
“The Cosmos have been a big part of my life for a long time. I have many special memories here, including three title wins. I’m looking forward to another run for the Championship and being around my family and friends who have been a huge support in my career,” said Danny Szetela.
After two years spent recovering from injury, Szetela joined the Cosmos for their inaugural season in 2013.
Always a favorite of the 5 Points, the Cosmos supporters, the 29-year-old had nothing for praise for them when his departure was announced.
“You know, I’m going to miss them. The supporters group was awesome. I loved just getting out on the field, listening to the guys sing, or marching just before the game starts and that’s something I’m gonna miss.”
“I’ve played all over the world. You know, the Five Points are a supporters group that from the first minute to the last minute, no matter the score, winning or losing, bring the noise all game. They support no matter what; when you’re losing. That’s something, in America, that you don’t see a lot.
“For the fans, I wish them the best and hope the Cosmos do come back and that they have a team to support again.”
Few could have imagined that with the return of the club, Szetela could have returned so quickly.
The Cosmos now have nine players signed for the 2017 season.
