In a surprising turn of events, David Diosa has returned to the club he has been a part of since 2010 after signing with the USL’s OKC Energy just under a month and a half ago.Giovanni Savarese had indicated on Tuesday that a former Cosmos player would return to the club. On Saturday, he highlighted all the qualities Diosa had displayed.

“We are pleased to bring yet another player from our 2016 roster. David not only had a tremendous season last year, but also made a positive impact on the rest of the team,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese in a press release. “Securing a player from our reboot season like David speaks highly of our commitment to providing local talent an opportunity to grow professionally and help the team evolve.”

While Diosa’s social media showed he was traveling the next day, few could have imagined that Diosa’s situation would play out so similarly to Danny Szetela, who also left to be signed by another club before returning after Rocco Commisso kept the Cosmos operating.

“I’m thrilled to rejoin my home team,” said Diosa in the same release. “Even though I left for a couple of months, I always hoped to be able to return and play in front of my family and friends, as well as the supporters who have given so much to the team.”

A member of the NASL team since the 2013 reboot, Diosa’s involvement with the New York Cosmos stretches back to 2010 and the Cosmos Academy U-18 team, where he scored the first Cosmos goal since their collapse in the 80’s.

“I already have love for the shirt since I played for the academy,” Diosa said to DNAinfo.com New York upon signing the contract. “I know what it means and the history. I feel proud to wear the shirt.”

Despite a breakout year for the young winger, who can also fill in on the left side of the back line, he was released along with most of his teammates a month after winning the NASL title. The midfielder started 11 of his 23 appearances last season notching three goals and adding three assists.

His performance was enough to get the attention of the OKC Energy which whom he signed shortly after.

However, after the shutdown of the Cosmos was stopped by the efforts of Rocco Commisso, the kid who grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens found himself yearning to return home to the club who gave him his start, according to a source who confirmed the move to TICC prior to its announcement.

Diosa now returns for his fifth season with the New York Cosmos.
