First three re-signings of the season – Richter, Ochieng, Calvillo return

The Cosmos are back, although a major rebuilding phase awaits them on the field. Still waiting on news of a home for the 2017 season, many questions are still remain on who will suit up for the green and white.

While several mainstays and fan favorites of the club have departed, three players will return for them in 2017.

After joining from Bethlehem Steel in late September 2016, the right fullback started five of six appearances for the team. Playing in the NASL Championship Final, the Pennsylvania native scored the penalty kick that sealed the club’s third NASL title in four season.

The Kenyan international factored heavily after signing with the club next year. Starting 11 of his 13 appearances and adding an assist, a series of injuries to Roversio, Carlos Mendes, and Jimmy Ockford permitted “Cheche” considerable playing time.

He also saw a return to the Kenyan national team who recalled him for several matches last year.

The US youth international only saw three appearances last season, but made a splash in his first start, the final match of the regular season, by scoring a headed goal against Minnesota United.

Calvillo received call-ups to the US U-19s last season.

  1. Great news. especially Ochieng #1.

    Now sign:
offer a coaching position to Marcos Senna

    • With the short notice I wouldn’t be surprised to see several Cosmos B players added for depth, and the team built mostly around returning players. Maybe some NASL free agents. Could be rough in the Spring.

With the summer window we could maybe see a name. Asharvin perhaps

      • Also worth noting John Neeskins tweeted out a pic of himself with the Cosmos.

Could be nothing, or they may have had contact.

  2. Why you do this cosmos?
there better be a long term plan……
With MLS heading to San Diego and Miami, it will be tough for nasl to survive.

    • That’s an enticing 4 for the attack! Personally, I’d substitute Berbatov (because of his price tag) or Cooper for any promising u-23 Mexican/Honduran/US/CostaRican/Colombian/Uruguayan striker/forward. Get some young kid in the mix who can learn and develop with that group.

    • Agree. Diego Forlan was mentioned before. He is 37 yrs old and still scoring goals in the Indian Super League. Few weeks ago he scored three goals in one game.
Another top scorers now are Miroslav Klose and Sebastian Abreu from Uruguay, even if they are older.
Cosmos would love to see these stellar players…

  3. sorry but a player who is 37 is too old, I would not buy a player older than 32 unless he is a world class player but even there I would think twice

  4. now they have to sign back the three goalkeepers, Mendes, Mulligan, Velela, Flores, Bover, Guenzatti, Mancini, McTurk, and Ayoze, then try and have back Fernandes and Restrepo so the midfield is almost ready. I’d try and sign back John Neeskens, Watson-Siriboe and Oniewu for the defence. What do you suggest for the attack other than Berbatov and Pinho? Hercules Gomez retired, and I would sign someone like Kranjcar for the midfield, two world class players must be featured in Cosmos lineup

    • Fernandes was just signed by Tampa Bay. Fingers crossed for Restrepo.
Complete fantasy but Balotelli, Alan Pulido, or Erick Gutierrez would be great.
