The 25-year-old made 25 appearances for St Louis last season, scoring 14 times. With his previous club, Santa Tecla FC in the El Salvadorian first division, the forward found the net 25 times in 45 appearances.
“Irvin is an exciting young talent,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese in a press release. “He had a great season last year with Saint Louis and we are confident he will continue to grow and improve while at the Cosmos.”
“I’m very happy to be joining a team with such great history and success,” said Irvin Herrera. “I’ve heard many good things about the coaching style of Gio and his team and I’m looking forward to contribute to the season ahead.”
At least some of those good things must have come from Andres Flores. Both players are part of the El Salvadorian Men’s National Team, where Herrera has 13 caps. The two also combined on the goal that advanced their country into this year’s Gold Cup with a Flores assist feeding a strike from Herrera.
The remaining question is on whether this loan could become permanent after the 2017 season (similar to the original Flores loan). The new Cosmos striker sent a farewell tweet to the fans of St. Louis that sounded less like a “see you later” and more like a “goodbye”.
