After the roster was cut loose recently, the first member of the 2016 New York Cosmos has announced his departure from the club as Jairo Arrieta returns to Costa Rica to play in the Primera División.
The Tico announced his departure via social media channels on Friday evening, marking himself as the first member of this year’s champions to announce himself as part of a new club.

“Grateful to God for this new challenge, as of today I’m another member of Herediano, and will give my best for these colors,” read the caption on his posting.
Arrieta started 20 of his 26 appearances for the New York Cosmos, scoring seven goals and adding four assists. He also started both of the team’s postseason matches and scored the first of the four penalty shootout goals the club converted in the final.
This will mark Arrieta’s first return to play in Costa Rica since 2012 when he was part of Saprissa, who claimed their 33rd league title last week with a shutout of Herediano. Arrieta played in the league between 2003 and 2012 for his native Guanecasteca, Brujas and Saprissa.
Herediano claimed the Summer 2016 and 2015 titles and will look to repeat the achievement in 2017.
