After losing three players to transfers across the course of the season, the Cosmos made a move yesterday to add some depth to their roster by recalling Jimmy Mulligan from his loan with Swope Park Rangers, the Sporting Kansas City USL affiliate.
“Having Jimmy back with the team gives us more flexibility,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese. “The length of the Fall Season will test our depth. Jimmy can contribute a great deal to this team going forward.”
Mulligan has been a part of the club since 2014, but playing time has been difficult to find on a competitive roster, where he has started five of only six appearances over two seasons. Signed originally as a midfielder, Mulligan is now listed as a defender after the transition to the back line he began to undergo last season.
The Long Island native found plenty of playing time under Marc Dos Santos, head coach of the Rangers and former head coach of the Ottawa Fury that made a run to the NASL Championship finals last season. With the USL club, Mulligan started 16 of 17 appearances, logging 1,432 minutes.
“Playing in Kansas City helped me further develop my game, and I’d like to thank the coaches and players for that,” Mulligan said. “I’m happy to be back with my team and I’m ready to contribute.”
