The Cosmos may have announced the return of two key members of their back line yesterday afternoon, but one of the younger components of the defensive unit has moved on to a new destination.

Tuesday, it was announced that Jimmy Ockford would be joining with San Jose Earthquakes USL affiliate Reno 1868 FC ahead of their inaugural season in USL. Ockford becomes the club’s seventh player, joining a defensive unit that features young USL talents Jordan Murrell and Brenton Griffiths.

“Jimmy is a very solid center back and a proven leader,” said 1868 FC Head Coach Ian Russell. “I believe he will make a big impact this year.”

Reno 1868 tweeted out a graphic quoting Jimmy Ockford as saying, “I’m ready to make history with the team in it’s inaugural season”. Ockford added his own thoughts on his personal Twitter:

A fan favorite, Ockford logged 1,799 minutes in 28 games spread across two different loan spells in 2014 and 2016. He added 13 games for USL side Seattle Sounders 2 in his gap year of 2015. A solid defensive presence for the green and white, Ockford’s most well-known moment as a part of the Cosmos may have been his rap video with fellow defender Carlos Mendes in 2014. If you’ve lived under a rock since then, have one final listen to commemorate Jimmy’s tenure in New York.
