According to a release on Tuesday evening, the Seattle Sounders have loaned center back Jimmy Ockford to the New York Cosmos. Ockford, a second-round draft pick with the Sounders in 2014, was loaned to New York shortly after.

Ockford spent the season with the Cosmos making seven starts and ten appearances overall. He knocked in two goals in the regular season, adding another goal in three appearances in the US Open Cup.

Following his year with the Cosmos, Ockford returned to the Sounders, but found it difficult to find minutes with the first team. He managed only one appearance, a full match, with the MLS side, making another 14 with Seattle Sounders FC 2. According to Empire of Soccer, an MLS roster freeze may be part of the reason for the loan.

The Cosmos have not released a statement at this time.

Cosmos fans may also remember some of the concussion issues that seemed to plague him during his time in New York but they don’t appear to have followed him. He’s also a fan favorite who left a special memory for the supporters. Watch below!

He joins at an interesting time. With the ever uncertain nature of Roversio’s condition and the age of Mendes always a consideration, this offers him some chances for 2016. At 23, he’s the same age as new center back signing David Ochieng and I have to wonder if this may be the beginning of a transition for that back line. There will definitely be some competition for a spot there, and this is without the recent standout performance there by Mike Lahoud.

TL;DR: We’ve missed you, Jimmy. Welcome back!

Nicks Thoughts

Welcome back Ock! I mean that rap alone is reason to love this guy.

Ockford is more depth in a back line that is in need of it. I mean while Lahoud was a shock in the back against San Jose, lets remember, he was brought on to play the midfield and he was brought in that match because Mendes and Roversio had tweaks and Ochieng was stillĀ not available.

We need depth in the back and Ockford knows Mendes, Freeman, and Ayoze and could slot in when needed. I do not expect him to break the starting XI often but he is a nice addition as a fourth center back option.

It also will be nice seeing his family out at the stadium again as they came from PA every match and were involved with the supporters.
