Mkosana shared his thoughts in an Instagram post announcing the signing.
“Honored to join such a historic club @ifkmariehamns and thanks to the management for giving me this opportunity and believing in me. To everyone who has helped and supported me throughout this process, I’m forever grateful and can’t thank you enough for all your tremendous efforts,” said the striker.
IFK Mariehamn released a statement on their Facebook page with more insight on the situation of pay for Cosmos players and Mkosana’s aspirations.
“New York Cosmos won the title this year, unfortunately, they have financial problems and have not paid salaries to its players the past few months, therefore, Lucky had the opportunity to break their existing contracts for 2017 ahead of schedule, allowing Mkosana to be free to seek a new club. Mkosana has been coveted by many clubs in the United States but would have to play in Europe and therefore chose Finnish champions IFK Mariehamn.”
The club also added that Lucky would keep the familiar 77 number Cosmos fans recognized and that the contract length was for a year with an option for another.
After spending time in the NASL, USL, and NPSL, the forward will play abroad for the first time. IFK Mariehamn won their first Veikkausliiga title this season, claimed their first Finnish Cup in 2015 and will play in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
