The New York Cosmos announced the signing of Yasmani Duk today, putting an end to a waiting period that began a month ago. Terms of the deal were not announced by the team, but the player and his agent had previously stated that the the deal would be for a one-year loan with an option for the club to buy his contract.
Duk is a 27-year-old Bolivian striker who most recently played for Sport Boys Warnes, where he appeared in 14 matches and scored 5 goals, helping them to a Torneo Arpertura title and qualification for the 2017 Copa Libertadores.
Duk spent the bulk of his career playing for Oriente Petrolero, with the organization from 2010-2015, with a loan stint spent at La Paz FC for the 2012-2013 season. Prior to the loan, he averaged a handful of appearances per season for Petrolero, but after a 38 game start, 7 goal performance at La Paz, he played a bigger part with parent team with 35 games, 9 goals in 2013-14 and 26 games, 12 goals in 2014-15. He also saw time in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana across the last two seasons.
Duk has also become more active on the Bolivian national team, making four appearances and scoring a goal towards the end of 2015 in World Cup qualifying.
“Yasmani’s breakthrough to the national team shows he is playing at a high level,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese. “He will bring another dimension to our attack.”
This is a great pick-up for the Cosmos as they pick up an offensive talent that will reinforce a depleted forward corps consisting of Lucky Mkosana and Jairo Arrieta.
“This move to New York to join the Cosmos marks the beginning of a new journey for me,” said Duk. “I can’t wait to contribute to this great team. I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
