In a move that will add quality and depth to their backline, Ryan Richter, a proven option at right back, joins from Bethlehem Steel of USL, a team he’s been a part of since December.
If the name is familiar to Cosmos fans and followers of the league, it may be because of his 2015 effort with the Fury. Richter played all 32 matches of the NASL regular season and was part of a backline that permitted the least amount of goals that season (23), won the Fall season, and tied the Cosmos on points for the year. He also played both playoff matches for the Fury, appearing in the Final at Shuart.
“Ryan has great experience at this level,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese. “He is a versatile player who can contribute to our push for another championship.”
Richter departed Ottawa and joined Bethlehem Steel, the Philadelphia Union MLS affiliate. TICC had previously learned that the desire for closer proximity to his family led to the Pennsylvania native’s transfer from the Canadian side. He led the Steel with 29 appearances and tied for the lead on goals with 5, while adding 4 assists.
“It’s exciting to be back in the NASL,” Richter said. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for this club. Now it’s time to hit the ground running and help the team achieve its goals this season.”
Cosmos fans can expect some competition for that right back spot with Jimmy Mulligan having taken over the spot since his return from Swope Park Rangers.
