The Cosmos struck in the first half and then held off a dangerous United attack to win 1-0 and stay atop the fall and combined tables. A goal from David Diosa and a man of the match performance from Jimmy Maurer would be key to taking three points from the match.
Adam Moffat got the start over Danny Szetela as a holding mid and Lucky Mkosana was pushed up top with David Diosa taking his spot in the left midfield from last week.
Both sides had plenty of chances, but were unable to convert them into anything serious enough to trouble either keeper until the 32nd minute.
At that point, Ruben Bover spotted Diosa open in the box hitting him with a perfect cross that the Jackson Heights native volleyed from a tight angle on the left side past Minnesota keeper Sammy Ndjock.
Minnesota nearly equalized in the 36th minute when Lance Laing’s free kick from about 35 yards out slammed into the crossbar and away.
New York came close to doubling the lead when Mkosana stole a ball and made a solo run on net. His indecision between firing or passing to an open Moffat led to him losing the pass option and firing a weak shot directly to the keeper.
The score held through halftime.
Chances continued to come for both sides in the second half. In the 55th, Laing wound up in a breakaway with the Cosmos keeper. Jimmy Maurer went to ground and Laing nearly got around him before the keeper’s outstretched hand barely managed a touch on the ball to push it wide left. Jimmy Mulligan made it back in time to clear it from danger.
Five minutes later, the Jamaican fired another cannon directly at Maurer. Unable to hang onto it, Moffat was there to clear it.
Ramirez was a danger all evening but either sent his shots wide or had them denied by Maurer, including a pair of dangerous chances in the box batted wide by the keeper who posted his tenth shutout of the year.
Arango got busy with two chances late in the match, including a header stopped by Ndjock and a shot tipped wide.
With the win, the Cosmos are now unbeaten in eight overall and take a 15-game unbeaten streak at home into their match next week against FC Edmonton, second in both the combined and fall tables. This will be their last home game before hitting the road for two.
