The Cosmos wrapped up their preseason losing to Charleston in a shutout. Despite controlling large portions of the match and some very promising attacks, Battery goalkeeper Alexandros Tambakis was up to the task.
The Cosmos sent out a 4-1-4-1 formation to start the match.
Jairo Arrieta got the start up top. Ruben Bover, Juan Arango, Andres Flores, and Sebastian Guenzatti were in the attacking portion of the midfield corps. Mike Lahoud was the lone defensive mid. Jimmy Maurer got the start and the Cosmos back line mostly looked the same (Ayoze, Carlos Mendes, Hunter Freeman) looked mostly the same with one key difference; David Ochieng got the start in the spot recently vacated by Roversio.
In the 32nd minute, defender O’Brian Woodbine‘s ball sent into the area found the head of midfielder Maikel Chang who headed it across the net and into the path of forward Ricky Garbanzo who finished with a header of his own.
The Cosmos made several subs to start the second half. Eric Calvillo entered for Lahoud, Niko Kranjčar replaced Arango. and Yohandry Orozco took over for a departing Bover.
The Battery doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when Chang once again found Garbanzo for another header and another goal.
The Cosmos made an offensive sub, removing Guenzatti for Lucky Mkosana. Guenzatti had, as the Battery tweeted, “looked like NY’s most dangerous attacking player all night.”
The substitution was to no avail as the Battery added a third goal in the 80th. Chang would play a part in this as well, as his cross was deflected and midfielder Dante Marini volleyed it for the 3-0.
The final Cosmos sub entered in the 88th minute when Jimmy Ockford took the spot of Carlos Mendes.
There are currently no friendlies scheduled between now and the home opener on April 3rd.
