The New York Cosmos hung on to win their road game in San Francisco 1-0, with a goal from Emmanuel Ledesma and a shutout from Jimmy Maurer. The goal leaves them a point behind the NASL lead as they enter Week 6.

The Cosmos unveiled a surprising XI to start the match with neither Carlos Mendes or Ayoze on the back line and no true striker to start the match yet again. Jimmy Mulligan and Emmanuel Ledesma received their first starts of the season on the back line and midfield, respectively.

Neither side was able to find the net in the first half, but there was plenty of physical play and shoving between the two in their first encounter. The Cosmos came close with an opportunity in the 36th minute after Deltas keeper Romuald Peiser tipped a cross away. Javi Marquez recovered it and fired a shot, but Peiser was able to make the save.

Marquez came close again in the 48th as a powerful shot just outside the box crept just wide of the far post.

Despite building momentum in the second half, the Cosmos broke the deadlock in the 69th minute behind a goal from Ledesma. The Argentine made a run just inside the box and chipped a ball that floated over Peiser, and kissed the far post before landing inside the net.

Marquez continued to test Peiser, firing a cannon from outside the box that the keeper dove to clear.

San Francisco came close to finding an equalizer in stoppage time, but their effort trickled across the mouth of the goal and out of bounds.

The win puts New York in a three-way tie for second, but are in fourth place based on goal differential. They next travel to Jacksonville to play the Armada on May 6th.

  • Peiser proposed to his girlfriend prior to the match. We assume she said yes since he’s a keeper.
  • Cosmos are now looking more like a road team, earning seven points in their three road games with three goals, compared to 1 point in two home games with one goal.
  • Danny Szetela wore the captain’s armband tonight, in the absence of Carlos Mendes and Ayoze.
  • Jimmy Maurer is now tied for the league lead in saves and shutouts at 21 and 3, respectively.

  1. there was scrappy midfield play.
there was a dazzling goal with a touch of audaciousness.
there was silky smooth reporting and analysis by Luis.
and there was this: “oh what a feeeeeeeling, when we’re raising Diosa up to the ceilingggggg”
Spending time with titans of NYC sports journalism, watching a road win unfold with Cosmos supporters, and having it all come together in the middle of the mighty Qboro. man, what a feeling.
