The New York Cosmos played the Jacksonville Armada to a 1-1 draw in their second home game of the season. Javi Marquez scored the opening goal of the evening with JC Banks finding one for the visitors to give each team a point.
There weren’t too many surprises in the starting XI for the home side. While Giovanni Savarese indicated Mendes could play, the decision was made to omit him from the lineup.
Instead, David Ochieng and Dejan Jakovic partnered up with Ryan Richter and Ayoze on the right and left sides, respectively. Eugene Starikov received the start up top with support from Marquez, Andres Flores and Walter Restrepo. Danny Szetela and Juan Guerra remained on the defensive end of the midfield.
The Cosmos nearly opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Restrepo received a ball from Marquez, putting a ball on net that was cleared off the line.
The Armada had a series of dangerous moments in the 13th and 21st minutes inside the Cosmos’ box, but were unable to get a true shot off at Maurer.
The Cosmos finally pulled ahead in the 22nd when Restrepo made a run across the edge of the box, drawing triple coverage to the middle, then slid a ball to an unmarked Marquez inside the right side. Marquez controlled it, then positioned himself to slip a ball inside the near post for the lead.

Starikov nearly doubled the lead in the 33rd minute when his attempted finish from a Richter cross was saved by Jacksonville’s Caleb Patterson-Sewell. He had a series of opportunities in the second half, but was unable to capitalize on them as the two sides battled into the second half.
However, the Armada found an equalizer as JC Banks received a ball at the edge of the box, dribbled along the line, and buried a high strike to the far corner past Maurer in the 67th minute following a Kaylen Ryden assist.

Despite each team getting its chances, neither side was able to find another goal and the match ended in a draw.
With the draw, the Armada stay atop the league and surrender only their first goal of the campaign. The Cosmos are tied for third on points, but drop to fifth on goal differential.
The Cosmos next travel to San Francisco for a date with the Deltas next weekend.
- The Cosmos are now winless in both their games at home, but are unbeaten in their last two overall, permitting only one goal.
- This is their third of four matches scoring a goal or less.
- Armada coach Mark Lowery was ejected from the match in the moments following their goal.
