New York Cosmos defeat Carolina RailHawks 2-0, sweep season series

The New York Cosmos defeated the Carolina RailHawks by a score of 2-0, sweeping the season series and adding three precious road points to their position atop the NASL Fall and Combined tables.

14449711_1091100480927100_4493044509250910226_nNew York maintained the 4-1-4-1, but made a number of changes. Ryan Richter made his first start for the Cosmos at right back.

The midfield saw some changes as Andres Flores took a position on the outside left, Yohandry Orozco took a spot as the right center attacking mid and Adam Moffat slid into the holding role.

Yasmani Duk started in the forward position.

The Cosmos dominated possession in the first half, but struggled to find the final ball on most occasions or failed to make the most of them when presented, sending long-distance shots over the bar. Carolina, had fewer opportunities, but the more dangerous ones in the first half.

New York finally got on the scoreboard in the second half in the 71st minute off an Adam Moffat penalty kick. Connor Tobin was judged to have brought down Sebastian Guenzatti in the box, leading to the opportunity at the spot.

Fans barely had time to blink before the Cosmos were on the board again after Ruben Bover made a run into Carolina’s defensive third and unleashed a shot from about 25 yards out. Bryan Sylvestre barely moved and New York quickly doubled their lead.

With the win, the Cosmos stretch their lead in the fall table to six points, seven points in the combined table. They now return home to Shuart Stadium where they will host the Strikers on Sunday.
