The New York Cosmos won’t be the only NASL side to play at Belson Stadium in Queens this June. Ten days after the Cosmos play Jersey Express in their US Open Cup match, new NASL side Puerto Rico FC will play the Puerto Rico Men’s National Team in the Clasico de Futbol at the St. John’s University stadium.
Carmelo Anthoney has worked to have the friendly held on the same weekend as the Puerto Rican Day Parade, in a city that holds the largest community outside of the island itself.
“Puerto Rico is part of my heritage and in dedication of my father’s birthplace, it’s an honor to restore professional soccer with PRFC and support youth soccer projects with the Puerto Rico Football Federation,” stated the New York Knicks All-Star. “With the Puerto Rican Day Parade being an iconic institution and America’s largest cultural celebration, we are excited for the team to participate and show our community appreciation.”
With PRMNT players on PRFC, it’s unclear how the lineups will be handled. But, this will offer an interesting first look at some Cosmos competition down the road to Cosmos and NASL fans in the New York area.
The match will be held on June 11th, a day before the parade.
