The New York Cosmos and representatives of other New York teams, including the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Liberty, and Rangers, have joined the #NotAFan campaign, a major initiative against domestic violence in sports.
New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito is the first public official in the US to launch a major campaign against domestic violence in sports, working with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
“Domestic violence is a widespread social problem and professional sports are not immune,” states the campaign’s website. “When an athlete is involved in an incident, sports fans are often caught in the middle and forced to reconcile their allegiance to a team and their feelings about domestic violence with little direction. This can cause conflict, confusion, and misunderstanding. #NotAFan provides sports fans with a medium where they can openly support their team while maintaining and communicating that domestic violence is unacceptable, rather than picking a “side.”
New York Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese and forward Lucky Mkosana join current and former New York athletes from the Mets (Jeurys Familia), Yankees (Joe Girardi), Knicks (John Starks), Liberty (Kiah Stokes) and Rangers (Rod Gilbert) in spreading that message.
“Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito got in touch with Erik Stover and mentioned she had the other teams involved and wanted us as well,” a club spokesperson told TICC.
“It’s a strong message about not tolerating domestic violence, which we fully support.”
