Match Recap: New York Cosmos earn first win of 2017, defeat Miami 2-0

The New York Cosmos were outshot heavily and saved by the upright on two occasions, but hung on to a 2-0 win in Miami, their first of the 2017 season.

Danny Szetela and Ayoze each scored a goal and Jimmy Maurer held Miami silent for his second shutout in three games.

Questions still surround the Cosmos’ back-line ahead of second preseason leg

Things seem to be coming together well for the Cosmos as the club prepares to head to Bermuda for the second leg of their preseason tour. In the first leg, the club won all three of their friendlies in the Dominican Republic but, more importantly, the team seemed to improve from match to match. As it stands, the Cosmos roster has twenty players under contract, but only two center backs.

The New York Cosmos find themselves dangerously close to fading back into the state they existed as for nearly thirty years: a memory. Answers are not forthcoming from the club. Players have been released with no statement. Staffers have been terminated again with no statement. Rumors of the current ownership seeking new owners or investors persist. Again, no statements.

With no answers coming from the club, some thoughts on how the Cosmo have been run has come from Ayoze, a staple of the team and a member of the 2016 NASL Starting XI. His recent interview with Marca painted an unflattering image of how things were being run. Continue reading

Silly season is well underway now as another member of the Cosmos may also be looking at options other than the green and white next season.

A staple of the New York Cosmos back line, Spaniard Ayoze has been crucial to their fortunes from starting 29 of the 30 matches he played, to sinking a penalty in their shootout at the NASL Final. His performance earned him an NASL Golden Ball nomination and spot in the league’s Best XI alongside captain Carlos Mendes and midfielder Juan Arango.

Ayoze receives green card, Cosmos free up international spot

With the departure of Niko Kranjčar, the Cosmos were back down to seven international players on the roster. Today, they are down to six.

Spanish defender Ayoze has received a green card, re-classifying him as a domestic player and freeing up an international spot for the New York side. Continue reading
