Last year’s Open Cup match between the Cosmos and NYCFC had everything you could want in a soccer story. A 2-0 lead from the visitor. An equalizer in the 90th minute. A missed penalty kick in extra time and a come from behind win in penalty kicks for the home team.
And now, the Cosmos are one game away from the next chapter of this story.
We are still waiting on the results of the New York Pancyprian Freedoms vs Jersey Express tonight. The winner of that match will play the Cosmos in Belson Stadium at St John’s University on June 1st.
But, in a surprise to few, the winner of the latter match was drawn to play NYCFC. One added dynamic to the story? If the Cosmos move on, this time they play the MLS side on the road.
With the MLS team’s home grounds at Yankee Stadium, it is unclear whether they will be able to host it there. The Yankees will be on the road during the stretch when the round would be expected to be played. At TICC, we’ve gotten feedback previously that Open Cup matches would not be hosted there. Empire of Soccer appears to have confirmed that information.
We’ll get back to you with more information once we have it, including our first opponent in the US Open Cup.
