US Open Cup: NASL gets a first look at possible opponents

US Soccer announced the First Round matchups of the 2017 US Open Cup yesterday, the 104th edition of the tournament. While the opening round will take place on May 9th and 10th, the absence of a third division this year means the NASL and USL will both drop in on May 16th and 17th.

Another round would follow prior to any potential match-up with an MLS side.

No matter who their opponent is, the Indy Eleven will enter the Second Round of the US Open Cup on the road. Depending on the outcome of the match, the Eleven will either travel to Scicluna Field at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI to play AFC Ann Arbor (NPSL) or to Ultimate Soccer Arenas of Pontiac, MI to square off with the Michigan Bucks (PDL).

The current league leaders, the Jacksonville Armada, face a home or away scenario. Should Miami United FC (NPSL) win the First Round, the Armada will travel to Ted Hendricks Stadium in Hialeah, FL, otherwise they would host the Boca Raton Football Club (NPSL) at Southern Oak Stadium of Jacksonville University.

Jacksonville’s NPSL side, the Armada U-23s, will also play in the tournament, appearing on May 10th against The Villages SC (PDL) at Patton Park in Jacksonville.

Miami FC’s hosting situation is not completely clear yet. A win by Red Force FC (Florida State Soccer Association) would result in a match at Tropical Park in Miami. Should South Florida Surf (PDL) win, it’s unclear at this point who would host the match.

The Cosmos also face a home or away scenario. A showdown with the Clarkstown SC Eagles (NPSL) would result in a game played at Rocco B Commisso Stadium at Columbia University in Manhattan. Should Reading United AC (PDL) win, this means a trip to Exeter Township Senior High School in Reading, PA for the NASL defending champions.

Regardless of their opponent, North Carolina FC will enter the Open Cup on the road. They could head to Greensboro, NC to play the Carolina Dynamo (PDL) at Macpherson Stadium. Otherwise, a trip to Williamsburg, VA could be in store with a match against Legacy 76 (NPSL) at Wanner Stadium.

The San Francisco Deltas will play host to their opponent in their first appearance in the Open Cup with either Burlingame Dragons FC (PDL) or El Farolito (San Francisco Soccer Football League) facing them at Stanford University.

The NASL went 6-1-2 against USL and PDL opponents in 2016 in their opening round, including results from Minnesota United, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers and Rayo OKC.

  1. Spring cleaning recently and I stumbled across a 2013 Cosmos home game pamphlet. Talk about depressing, man, there are only about 3 teams from 2013 that are still in the NASL.
