Covering Soccer 101 with Grant Wahl

by

Happy New Year’s, Grant!

Thanks, you too! How are you?

I’m good, man. I appreciate the fact that you agreed to be interviewed by a ‘ham and egger’ like myself. It’s the New Year, how you are overall? Everything good?

Yeah, it’s the start of the New Year. This is the time to look back on the previous year and all the things that lie ahead. I’m really excited about 2015.

Good Stuff. Just so our audience is aware, we’re going to talk about your career, your life and the beautiful game we love. Let’s start out… Kansas. You were born and raised in Kansas, tell us a bit about it.

My entire family is from Kansas and Missouri. My Mom grew up just on the Missouri side of the Kansas City line. My Dad was from Central Kansas. My entire family basically went to the University of Kansas, which was what I expected to do for a long time.

I grew up following the University Kansas basketball, the Kansas City pro teams like the Chiefs and the Royals. The Comets were my first soccer team. They were a Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) team who I followed quite a bit in the 80s. Then I also followed the Wiz when they first came out in MLS back in 1996.
