Important Dispatch

-- Stadium Group bidding to build a Stadium at Willets Point, but may be pipped by the Wilpons --

When the expected bid did not come back in October 2007, the Borough Boys have had a tough job. Many people lost interest in NYC expansion as probably lost faith in our group. The reality was on that day no one knew what kept the bid from being placed. We had a choice. Should we hang it up or continue the job we set for ourselves on a cold January afternoon in Sunnyside.

We kept moving - first order was to stop going in our pockets for something that seemed a bit further off and the second was to continue to reach out to people about bringing professional soccer to New York City. In that time we met with potential owners of a USL club. We went to the Brooklyn Borough President’s office ourselves and met with Marty Markowitz and his staff to pitch a stadium for a USL side in Coney Island.  That idea was turned down, but we began working on a location in Red Hook.  We pursued an investor group.  We brought the President of the Long Island Rough Riders to inspect the site.  As you might imagine, however, cajoling investors and government to part with tens of millions is no easy task, but we’ve been trying.

Frustrated by having so little control over our dream, Leo, one of our founding members took it a step further and created a Joint Venture to build a MLS sized stadium in New York City. Gathering an impressive list of partners who have successfully built MLS stadiums, they put together a plan for a facility located at Willets Point in Queens.  The Borough Boys have spent the better part of the last year and a half helping him with these plans and actually trying to build a stadium for the club themselves.

The Borough Boys successfully reached out to Paul Kemsley and had interaction with him and facilitated a meeting between Mr. Kemsley and Leo. So yes, we have been in close contact with the man who now owns the rights to the Cosmos. Mr. Kemsley was very supportive of the stadium plan that Leo had put together.

The stadium joint venture is still active and in the mix but now there is a competitor. We believe Fred Wilpon is back in the stadium mix.  We have specific information about this beyond the article in the New York Daily News which suggests that they are more active then they let on to Michael Lewis.

We can tell you this for sure - whoever builds a stadium, we will continue to be the official supporters club for the New York City MLS team.  It’s been acknowledged by the Front Office. We will offer our assistance in creating public support for this team. The Borough Boys still have the ear of KEY political personnel and we will try to win their support for a soccer team in New York.

Hey, it’s all we can do. We might have been over our heads and I am sure there are some who said, "These guys are out of their minds" but since day 1 we have said, we will do ANYTHING to bring soccer to New York City, especially east of the river and all we have been trying to do is back those words.

So to you all, no matter what happens the next year is going to be very interesting and quite possibly our dreams will come true. Those who have been with us from day one and have stuck with us, THANK YOU and please continue to support our movement because at the end of the day this is about the beautiful game of soccer and we want our team. A team that we will support whole heartedly.

Mr. Kemsley, Mr. Garber and even Mr. Wilpon if you are out there. We are your supporters, we are your season ticket holders and we are here to help. Our message is clear, This is Cosmos Country!

"When the expected bid did not come back in October 2007, the Borough Boys have had a tough job."

An actual English teacher let you out of 7th grade writing sentences like this? Holy smokes.

Wow. Attacking grammar and posting anonymously? They're missing one internet tough-guy at the honeycomb hideout.

Seems like a complete waste of time to me, but good luck. As a New Yorker who drives more than an hour and a half each way to support my MLS club I don't get the obsession with having a club that's right next door.

jimmystagger + May 3, 2010 11:01 PM (#) :

Good luck and everything but...I can't wait until this team gets put in Queens and then fans in Manhattan say its too far. Also, can you really bring back the star-studded traditions of the Cosmos in this league? Forget it. At best you'll have 2 DPs and then the same mid-to-poor level players every MLS expansion team has had so far. Atiba Harris running around in a Cosmos shirt anybody? C'mon.

Well let me just say, between the Cosmos history and the Borough Boys proven abilities, people will come to the games. We intend to be, and are already, an integral part of the effort to bring top flight football to sell out crowds in NYC. We won't sit idly by like the ESC and cry about how no one is coming to the new stadium.

Who Shot Sam + May 4, 2010 9:24 AM (#) :

With all due respect Leo, nobody's crying about anything. I'm not a member of ESC but RBNY attendance this season is on average thousands higher than last year, with only a few low-profile additions to the squad. I've even seen a Borough Boy or two out on Market St. in Newark.

Leo Glickman + May 4, 2010 9:33 AM (#) :

The attendance at Red Bull Arena thus far is an unmitigated disaster, and if ESC is happy with that, so be it. You've got everything in place, arena, public transport, proximity to soccer loving communities, and you can't put 15,000 butts in the seats on a beautiful saturday night.

It is a failure on the part of every stakeholder in the Red Bull team... ownership, supporters' club, and players. And if Red Bull supporters don't see that as a problem, well, it's pretty hopeless.

And if you don't see why New Yorkers might won't their own team to claim and be proud of, then I have my doubts about whether you're a new yorker as you claim to be.

Who Shot Sam + May 4, 2010 9:42 AM (#) :

Unmitigated disaster? I don't think so.

Besides we really don't need lessons on supporting a club from people who can't bring themselves to take a 20 minute PATH ride to the ground. I was there for almost every game last year when we sucked and I'll be there for every game this season regardless. Meanwhile you'll be pining for a team that may never exist.

As for your last point, I live in Dutchess County. Proud New Yorker and proud to support MY CLUB.

Leo Glickman + May 4, 2010 9:52 AM (#) :

Well there you go, you don't understand what it means to live, breathe, and work in the City, so I don't expect that you would understand what it would mean to have our own club. Red Bull is the suburban team, and hopefully we'll get our urban team.

Everyone has different reasons for not supporting Red Bull, I was a metros season ticket holder until Red Bull re-branded the team. For me, cheering the name of an austrian energy drink, playing a role in a cross-marketing effort to sell soda was not for me. As much time as I spend with soccer, there are some principles that are more important than soccer, Shankley notwithstanding.

But other Borough Boys have different reasons, but I can assure you, it's not related to travel. For all the time you've spent on this blog Sam trying to convince people who are absolutely not going to be Red Bull fans, you could have done something to appeal to your very real potential fan base. But like too many Red Bull fans, you don't.

You may not think the attendance of the last couple of games is disastrous, but your manager and front office agree with me, read the papers.

I've been to most of the RB games this season, including the US Open Cup. They are a lot of fun and the commute is refreshingly easier.

But an MLS bid like the Cosmos is something that the league cannot afford to dismiss. Not to mention, a team running around like Red Bull cans doesn't reflect my core values.

Commuting time has nothing to do with it, at least for me.

Who Shot Sam + May 4, 2010 10:16 AM (#) :

With all due respect, you have no idea what I do. I've never lived in the city, but worked there for 10+ years. I've also recruited new season ticket holders, brought new fans to games at RBA who will be coming back, and run a RBNY blog that has a growing audience.

I also know plenty of people who "live and breathe" the City but have no problem coming out to support RBNY. So that argument to me holds no water. There are a few like you who don't want to have anything to do with Red Bull, but I have my doubts about there being tens of thousands of NYC-based MLS fans just crying out for a team in Queens. I could be wrong of course, but I don't think so. I wonder if you'll be looking down your nose at suburbanites when you have 5K rattling around Wilpon's stadium in Queens, assuming it ever gets built.

who shot same. ur totally wrong. just shut up.

im from new york. i live there and work there. ive been to metrostars games many times. i was happy. but like leo when red bull bought the team and called it red bull "new york" i knew what it will mean. nothing but red bull red bull and red bull. its bad enough if coca cola bought the team but red bull is worse. but thats not the biggest point. calling a new jersey team a new yorker team didnt fit well for me. i lived in manhattan and getting from nyc to east rutherford is a pain. idk how much they boast about the PATH system it doest work. even now with their shiney new stadium (which i dig alot) they cant manage to fill it up. so your saying that the worlds biggest city , new york city, does not have a chance of selling out a stadium for a soccer match in any borough as opposed to new jersey harrison which is like what 13 miles away in a dirty poor slum? idk what ur talking about man. if anything red bull should have spent alittle more dough for development in the city rather than in the suburb. New jersey is not New York im sorry but ur not.

@ Borough boys. i support you in anything to bring a proper Cosmos soccer club to New York City. Future season ticket holder. New York City United S.C./ Cosomos Country!

Mr. Anonymous:

PATH doesn't work? How so? I took it for the first three games and it worked just fine. If some people can't bring themselves to support RBNY because of the energy drink branding then so be it. But just as I don;t think there is some magic bullet solution to the attendance issues in Harrison (which you unfairly call a slum), I don't think that sticking some team next to CitiField in Queens and slapping the Cosmos name on them is magically going to make 20,000 fans appear. It's still MLS and a lot of the ethnic communities and Eurosnobs will not support the league until the quality improves enough to rival the best leagues in the world. I'd rather not wait around for that to happen. If we can draw 15-18K regularly in Harrison I will be happy.

I hate to interrupt this conversation about the Torros Rojo, but...

The post sounds like a riddle that the reader is supposed to crack. Can you be more specific about what this Joint Venture is?

This is an informal linking between investors, or it is a legal entity that was set up? Leo is going to be an investor in this project? etc.

Fabio + May 4, 2010 5:59 PM (#) :

I have had faith in the Borough Boys and especially in Nick since first day !!!!
Fabio

Leo Glickman + May 4, 2010 8:10 PM (#) :

Torros is spelled with one "R". Does that clear things up Tommy?

Nick + May 4, 2010 9:30 PM (#) :

""When the expected bid did not come back in October 2007, the Borough Boys have had a tough job.""

Yea - I know my grammar isnt the best - but guess what - I have stated that myself 100 times on this site. Its more about movement and content than sentence structure but hey - whatever gives you a hard on!

As for the other argument - you probably have seen me out there - Its a lovely stadium - love watching a game there but as long as the League keeps talking about Queens for an MLS team...sorry - to close to home to give up that dream. sorry!

As a sports fan my whole life - i dont need someone to tell me what team to support and why - sorry - just the way it is!

prezoftheBB + May 7, 2010 5:28 PM (#) :

to any red fan that needs a reason why i wont support their club.... BOTTOM LINE. I SIMPLY DONT WANT TO SUPPORT THAT CLUB... LIKE MANY BB'S I WONT BE CONVINCED OTHERWISE... SO I DONT WANT TO HEAR ITS 20 MINUTES AWAY BY PATH. I DONT CARE IF IT WAS 5 MINUTES AWAY OR DOWN THE STREET. NO CHANCE.
UP THE BOROUGH BOYS.
